Representative Work Experience

Leadership

Technology projects and the change management that is often required are difficult to execute. To be successful I coach and/or hire people who are willing to experiment, sometimes fail, and always persevere. That is why I'm a firm believer of managing with situational leadership principles and modeling servant leadership. A great team is a diverse team which also means that each individual brings different strengths to the table. These strengths need to be unleashed by getting out of the way when it is appropriate. For new situations in which a colleague may not be as familiar, rather than taking over, I focus on coaching and supporting. Finally, for good people to do great work, I'm also a strong proponent of servant leadership from myself and by my direct reports. Our job is to surround ourselves with good people and reduce their obstacles for success.

Approach: Situational Leadership

Style: Servant Leadership

Recommendations

Kate - Direct Report, Vice President

I have had the privilege to work for Jeffrey for nearly seven years at The MENTOR Network. During his tenure, Jeffrey’s bold and fearless approach resulted in the organization experiencing tremendous digital transformation and change positioning us for the future. ...

When I joined the organization, only back office systems existed while field operations was largely on paper or performing significant manual activities. A short seven years later, the organization has an operational platform that is used by nearly twenty thousand people, has network access and field technology at thousands of programs across the country, and, most importantly, has a growing IT organization with a strong trusted relationship with operations.

Jeffrey is a true leader who partners with his staff to harness innovation, to encourage collaborative thinking and to solve problems that others are unable or unwilling to address. Jeffrey brought out the best in all who worked for him.

I had the opportunity to learn and grow professionally from him. He and I had an open, trusted and transparent working relationship which allowed us to communicate freely and work together to achieve more faster. He pushed me every day to learn more, to go beyond my comfort zone, and to have the courage to lead change in the organization even when it is most difficult.

Jeffrey fosters a very respectful and non-hierarchical work environment. Although he was a busy executive, he always made time to visit daily with the team, to offer help and guidance, provide support when needed, and have an open door to anyone. He openly met with staff at all levels to provide additional coaching, to collect feedback and to address concerns. Jeffrey not only provides feedback as a leader to his team, he always creates an open path for direct feedback from others.

I truly enjoyed working with Jeffrey. Any organization looking to transform and change would certainly be lucky to have him aboard.

Connie - Field Leader, Vice President

I've partnered with Jeffrey as an operations business leader at The MENTOR Network. When Jeffrey became our CIO, he met with field leaders such as myself and listened to the needs of the organization. ...

This was a critical first step as we were designing an internal service documentation system. I’ve always found him to openly engage in problem solving and work to deliver a valuable solution focused on what the end user needed to document and provide for our services. He enhanced IT to center on the day-to-day mission of our organization. Although budget constraints hadn’t always allowed the field to get all the solutions we wanted, he was honest in the constraints and worked to be creative to achieve value. He endeavored to create and support a team that partnered with the business to ensure the technology was meeting our needs – he and his team were true partners! See less

Daniel - Team Member, Director

As a 20+ year IT professional I have had the opportunity to work in a wide variety of IT organizations. Recently I had the pleasure of working as a Director in Jeffrey's IT organization at The MENTOR Network for more than three years. My experience in working with Jeffrey has proved to be immensely rewarding. ...

I had the opportunity to learn and grow professionally both from one-on-one conversations and seeing Jeffrey in action. I saw Jeffrey's leadership style as a balance between leading by example - never being afraid to roll up his sleeves and dig in to help solve a problem - and facilitating communication to ensure that senior business leaders agree on solutions and the IT organization understands clearly the problem to be solved. Just as importantly, Jeffrey was always thinking about ways to improve both the IT organization and the business and consistently encouraged everyone to think creatively and take risks to solve problems. Jeffrey's management style is to give clear direction but mostly stay hands off and let's the team apply their expertise and execute. Of course, he's always willing jump in to offer help or guidance where needed. Jeffrey is also a senior leader who actively solicits regular feedback and input from his team and his peers both on the content of work product and his own performance. Working with Jeffrey at The MENTOR Network was a pleasure and I hope that our professional paths will cross at some point in the future and we'll get a chance to work together again.

Linda - Executive Peer, Chief Legal Officer

I worked closely with Jeffrey on the executive team at The Mentor Network for many years. Jeffrey was not just a good team player and IT leader, he was a good business leader with strong business analysis and a willingness and ability to see technology issues in the multiple business dimensions that they usually inhabit.

Professional Bio

I was most recently the Chief Information Officer at The MENTOR Network, a $1.6B leader in behavioral health and post-acute care. In collaboration with business leadership I built a strategic Electronic Health Record (EHR) using a product management approach to drive quality and growth; I simultaneously delivered bottom-line savings in the back-office. These initiatives helped grow revenue 43% and EBITDA by 50% enabled by company-wide transformation of the business and of the IT function itself. During my tenure, I steered the company through multiple private equity transactions and an IPO bringing value through technology at each phase. Prior to MENTOR, I was the Vice President of Information Technology for Magellan Biosciences, a 100M+ private equity backed medical device company. Hired as the first technology executive of Magellan, I oversaw the strategic transformation of their worldwide customer-facing and back-office systems to refocus IT in support of the company’s growth objectives. Prior to Magellan, I was the Director of Information Technology at Biogen responsible for their Web, ERP, SOX program, and back-office systems. After initially creating a new IT function to build all web-related systems, I turned-around a struggling global ERP platform. I started my career in various consulting and leadership positions at Cambridge Technology Partners. I have an MBA from The Wharton School and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, College of Engineering.

Personal Bio

I am a committed husband and involved father. With a large growing family I value work-life balance, but I also try to be an example for my children of a strong work ethic. Therefore I'm often up late at night after putting the kids to bed preparing for the next day's work. I'm involved in my community having been on the board of my synagogue and participated in the advisory board of our community hospital, Newton Wellesley Hospital. I also volunteer as a soccer coach after school. For fun I enjoy gardening, building just about anything (planters, decks, etc), and of course I like tinkering. Ask me about wiring my smart home and writing software code to automate household activities.
